HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Huntsville-based CFD Research Corporation recently won three Small Business Innovative Research Phase I awards from the Missile Defense Agency within the U.S. Department of Defense.

In addition to ensuring reliability of commercial hardware, MDA selected CFDRC to support novel intercept launching systems and studies of propellant ingredients. In another award, the company will work with the MDA to expand the role of electromagnetic rail gun technology from long range fire support to a launching system capable of low cost exo-atmospheric interception of incoming missiles.

To aid U.S. strategic agility, CFDRC continues to grow its Expert Support Services by placing key people within the customer’s mission support areas.

Lt. Gen. (Ret) Joseph Cosumano, president of CFDRC, said the company’s “strategic efforts to expand ESS increases our synergy with our customers and helps assure our R&D path is consistent with all the varied missions that we support.”

After six months of the Phase I research, the company will later compete for Phase II awards valued at $1 million each.

CFDRC is a woman-owned small business founded in 1987 that develops and commercializes technologies for aerospace, biomedical, energy and materials markets.

The company was recently awarded a $750,000 Air Force research contract to further develop its patented paper-based Bio-Battery (TM) technology. It was also the first tenant to move into the new building along McMillian Park at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
