MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Governor Kay Ivey today announced that Owens Corning, a building products leader, is making a significant investment to construct a new shingle manufacturing facility in Prattville, providing a massive economic boost to Autauga County.
The facility is expected to create nearly 100 skilled manufacturing jobs, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce.
The new plant will operate a four-wide laminator capable of producing approximately 6 million squares of laminate shingles per year, bolstering Owens Corning’s production capacity for its high-performing roofing products. The facility will incorporate advanced automation and leading-edge technology.
“Owens Corning is a name known around the world, and I’m proud that this iconic company is planting roots in Prattville,” Governor Ivey said. “This major investment shows great confidence in Alabama’s workforce and in our state’s ability to support world-class manufacturing.
“With nearly 100 high-quality jobs on the way, this project is a big win for Autauga County and for all of Alabama,” she added.
Owens Corning recently ranked on the Fortune 500 list for the 71st consecutive year. The Toledo, Ohio-based company operates 150 facilities worldwide, with 17 asphalt roofing and components manufacturing facilities in the U.S. following the completion of the Prattville plant.
“Our new Prattville facility will service our growing contractor network as we strengthen our U.S. manufacturing footprint,” said Nico Del Monaco, Owens Corning Roofing President. “We are proud to join the Prattville community and expand Owens Corning’s presence in Alabama.
“This is an attractive location to service our customers, with a dedicated workforce that takes pride in producing a quality product,” he added. “We look forward to deepening our engagement with the local community.”
Support system
Owens Corning announced plans for a new Southeastern U.S. plant in February 2025, saying the strategic investment will expand the company’s roofing manufacturing network, enhancing its ability to meet the strong demand for its shingles.
State and local economic development officials collaborated closely with Owens Corning to make the project a reality, reflecting Alabama’s ongoing effort to attract long-term investment to both rural and urban communities.
The project is supported by a $4.9 million investment from the Growing Alabama program, which is accelerating improvements at the site in Prattville’s South Industrial Park.
In addition, AIDT, Alabama’s primary workforce development agency, will provide services valued at $885,000.
“This project demonstrates Alabama’s growing reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing,” said Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “Owens Corning’s decision to bring this innovative facility to Prattville reflects our state’s strong business climate and our commitment to supporting forward-looking companies with the infrastructure and workforce they need to succeed.”
Construction is expected to begin in the near future, with production beginning in Prattville in 2027.
Local impact
Local officials cheered Owens Corning’s investment plans in Prattville.
Mayor Bill Gillespie Jr. thanked the company directly for selecting his city for its growth project.
“Your decision to invest in Prattville showcases your commitment to innovation and excellence in building materials but also represents a significant milestone for our local economy, which promises to create high-quality jobs, stimulate growth and strengthen our workforce for generations to come,” Gillespie said.
“Together, we look forward to a long and prosperous partnership as we build a brighter future for all.”
Autauga County Commission Chairman Jay Thompson said he is looking forward to supporting Owens Corning’s success and celebrating an exciting chapter for the community.
“This is just the beginning of a promising partnership that will bring jobs to our community — jobs that will provide stability and help feed families,” Thompson said. “These opportunities will have a meaningful impact on our residents, offering economic growth and a brighter future for families in Prattville and beyond.
“As a high-performing building products leader, Owens Corning’s presence will strengthen our local economy and support the dreams of many.”
