MONTGOMERY, Alabama – More than $20 million is being awarded to 10 economic development organizations across the state to help ready industrial sites for new investments and high-quality jobs, Governor Kay Ivey announced Tuesday.
The awards are part of the Growing Alabama Tax Credit program, which uses private dollars to improve publicly owned sites for economic development. Donors receive a tax credit equal to the value of their contributions to approved economic development organizations.
Eligible projects for the Growing Alabama program include site preparation and infrastructure improvements on public land for industrial use, capital improvements at inland ports and intermodal facilities, and agricultural center construction and maintenance.
The program promotes economic development by funding industrial site readiness, a key factor for companies considering the state for a new facility or an expansion.
“As more companies seek to locate and expand in Alabama, Growing Alabama helps local communities large and small prepare for them,” Governor Ivey said. “From Gulf Shores to The Shoals, this latest round of funding is further proof of not just the state’s commitment to expansion, but that of Alabamians who want to see their communities succeed.”
The Alabama Department of Commerce administers the Growing Alabama program and applications are approved by the Renewal of Alabama Commission chaired by Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair.
In the latest round of funding, more than 29% is directed at Targeted Counties, continuing the administration’s focus on creating economic development opportunities in rural communities.
“Having shovel-ready sites to attract new investment keeps Alabama and local communities competitive and growing,” Secretary McNair said. “This funding allows local leaders to move quickly on their priority economic development projects. Growing Alabama continues to create investments and high-quality jobs that better the state and the lives of Alabamians.”
